Federally Funded Jobs Program?

I found an interesting blog about the idea of a federally funded jobs program.

I believe that on the surface a federally funded jobs program would put people to work building important public facilities as was seen in with the WPA. But could a federally funded jobs program actually help our economy in the long run? I'm not sure that it would. I'm not even sure people would be willing to work these types jobs when potentially they could be collecting unemployment or social security benefits. I think that a program like this really pushes the roll of government to the extremes of progressive activism. A program like this will likely remove worker competition and therefore decrease efficiency of the job market in the long run. After the funds for such a program run out we would be right back to where we started. The people working the program would likely not have done anything during that time which could have made them more competitive in the jobs market. So could such a program be beneficial to our economy in the long run or would it just be a short-term solution for a severe problem?
