I'm sure all of you are aware that today is Super Bowl Sunday, and that means that the majority of American sports fans will be going out and spending money on hilarious amounts of food and beverages. I read an article this morning talking about the economic impact that the game had on its host cities since the 60's. An economist who has compiled the numbers for each Super Bowl predicts that this years game will bring in between $325-$415 million into the city of Indianapolis. This is such a large amount of money for people to be spending in basically one day. I am curious as to how the money was spent in Detroit a few years ago.
I'm not sure how it was all spent, but being downtown for the superbowl in Detroit was amazing. The superbowl can do a lot for a city. Detroit was alive more than I've seen it in years. It's amazing how a city can come alive when it has an event like this. I'm curious to see how the superbowl compares to other major sporting events, maybe something like the olympics. Great post Michael.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there are emoney generating events such as thanks givings, christmas, hunting, and superbowl.. This is random but it would be nice if the upper class failies spend more money in general.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. I think that if we could have some of the upper class families spending more money than the economy would be better off than it is now. With that being said, you can not expect them to spend hundreds of dollars everyday throwing parities but it is a good start for people to spend more
DeleteWhen this much money is brought to a particular city, you wonder how much goes to the city itself instead of businesses and vendors around the city. I wonder what percentage of the $400 million goes directly into the city funds.
