Florida Set for New Cut in Spending on Colleges

Throughout this economic crisis, the subject of our national debt and our government spending mentality has been questioned. In order to deal with these issues, its clear that cuts have to be made. This article talks about the cuts that Florida is going to implement for higher level learning education. For this country, education is incredibly important, is this the area that we should be cutting budgets? If not, where else would it be relevant to cut our spending? Or is this simply a fact that budget cuts have to be made and it has to start somewhere? Citizens don't want increased taxes, but cutting our spending is almost more difficult to take action.

  1. I'm seeing a lot of contradictions in our current budget policy. Last week, someone posted an article about Obama's new college affordability initiative. This article discusses raising tuition in an attempt to offset state spending on colleges. I think we need more uniformity of policy in regards to federal/state deficit reduction. These two articles made me think that certain universities will prosper at the expense of others.

  2. Budget cuts have to be made and they do need to start somewhere, but education should not be where it starts. If we limit the populations for a higher education it may help in the short term by reducing the national debt but in the long term it will probable lead to the government spending more on social welfare in the future. There will never be one right answer to where the budget cuts need to be made.

  4. I agree with Cate. I think cuts should be made and its going to be tough deciding where to make them but I don't think that higher education should be taking the hit.

  5. Certainly cuts need to be made, but it should not be made in the higher education aspect of the budget. It is students of this higher education that need to take the place of politicians in the future. Why would it be smart to make cuts for our future?

  6. i agree with everyone above. I agree something has to be done and cuts do have to be made but why start with education. It is so important to our country to be educated and this is not a good place to start.

  8. definitely agree with everyone. In our current economy budgets cuts must be made but education is the future of our country and if that is where the cuts start we will continue to fall behind other countries in many categories.
