This past Friday Mitt Romney spoke about his wealth being a potential problem in terms of his relationship with the common American. He challenged anyone who is not in support of a "successful man in America" to "vote for the other guy." Also, Santorum stated that he "does not believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute." Do you think it was in Romney's best interest to make defensive comments about his wealth? Do you think Santorum was helping his chances by implying that he is in favor of potentially combining church and state?

I dont know whether or not it helped or hurt him, but I do think that when people look at it from his point of view they let his wealth stop them from voting for him. Who in America doesn't want to have wealth? How can u penalize someone just because they have money??
ReplyDeleteRomney's amount of wealth definitely creates disconnect from the common American. However, is it not expected that there will be some degree of disconnect between a potential US President and an average blue collar worker. Just because Santorum campaigns for the blue-collar worker does not eliminate an element of disconnect.
ReplyDeleteRomney's wealth may be excessive but it is not negative in a presidential campaign. How was his wealth acquired? How does he spend his money? These are the types of questions that should be asked.
I agree with Max. The amount of money Romney has, or any other candidate for that matter, is not was I find concerning; rather, how he acquires/spends it will better reflect his ability to lead a country. I think people get lost in trying to find a candidate who is the most relatable, yet the most connected candidate is not necessarily the best fit.
ReplyDeleteHaving church and state not seperated is definitely going to hurt Santorum. It's important in the public schools system that all is "equal". In america we are known as being the melting pot which includes all different kinds of ethnicities, races, religious beliefs and so forth. It was a silly statement in my mind.
