Kony 2012

This is a long video but it has gotten a lot of media attention recently, with Joseph Kony being at the center of the controversy. CNN posted an article that you can read here.

The article says "Jason Russell, the most prominent face of the group Invisible Children, has made the work of bringing about change very difficult indeed. Invisible Children's campaign is a well-packaged call to leave the state of affairs untouched; their message seems so modern because their tools are. The point made is conformist: Fight violence with violence, dismiss intricate steps of social change and make a narrow ideology mass-compatible by having millions of unquestioning people raise their fists in support. For the U.S., Europe and other generally comfortable corners of the world, this is a worrying picture of a mass culture that easily falls for propaganda."

What does this article make you think about Joseph Kony, and what do you think the group Invisible Children is asking for?

  1. I think that this article does not have all the facts. From the Invisible Children website "We are storytellers, activists and everyday people who use the power of media to inspire young people to help end the longest running armed conflict in Africa. We make documentaries, tour them around the world, and lobby our nation’s leaders to make ending this conflict a priority.
But we don’t stop there. Our development professionals from Central Africa partner with local communities to implement and maintain education programs and economic initiatives in the war affected region. Recovering communities require stability when it comes to education and economic initiatives, but the ever-changing conflict demands innovative solutions and quick mobilization. Our initiatiatives attempt to meet the region's need for both stability and flexibility."

No where in that description is there anything about using violence to combat violence.

  2. I'm not sure that just because their website doesn't say those words doesn't mean that they are not doing it. I think it would be very difficult to gather enough facts to know enough in order to make an educated opinion on this subject, or at least that is how I feel after reading this article.

  3. I think that the invisible children message is a great thing. That Joseph Kony needs to be stopped by 2012. However, this documentary does make it out to seem like they really only want money for their organization. I think it's an important clip to watch (even though it's a little long it'll hold your attention) because this is something that needs to be spread. Congress and Senate are now on their side so things could really begin to change.
