Why Tuition Has Skyrocketed at State Schools

http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/02/why-tuition-has-skyrocketed-at-state-schools/?ref=economy

Huge state funding cuts have caused tuition price increase for public schools and universities in the United States. Higher education is considered "discretionary spending", and one major point in the article is that states will have to pay trillions for the baby boomer retirement, leaving less money to train the future generations.

This seems like an unfair solution for future generations, although there may be nothing we can do about it. Should higher education be given a greater priority in the state's budget?

  1. It may be unfair but when budgets are spread thin something has to give. I don't think that college education should be that important to policy makers.

    1. I agree with you Nick. Cuts have to be made and this is the easiest program to take money away from for policymakers. There are so many things that deserve money and deserve priority, like higher education, so it is not an easy choice, but thats the way it goes.

  2. I disagree, I think higher education shouldn't be looked down upon as something that doesn't matter as much as other aspects of the budget, because it is literally investing in the future of this country. That being said, its clear that cuts have to be made across the board, and I don't see any way around having to cut from higher education as well as everywhere else in the budgets.

  3. I agree with Grant. I think higher education needs to be a priority in the state's budget. As Grant out it, it is a way to invest in our future. I know that cuts need to be made and especially after our role-playing exercise in class I can see how difficult it can be to make cuts but I dont think that we should take away from education.

  5. This is similar to the article that was posted a week or so ago about the educational budget cuts in Florida. I think that education is very important and should never be looked down upon. Budgets should be cut in different areas way before education.

  6. I have to say that education is one of the most important things that needs to be focused on. When making budget cuts I think it's important that we stay away from the schools. Education is what is going to bring us out the this path that we're on now. Everyones lives can be bettered through education.

  7. I agree with Paula's comment, we need to focus on higher education in oder to have people in the future who can solve some of the problems in our society. America has fallen way behind in a lot of categories because we are not putting as much emphasis on education. Although, there are many other challenges that policy makers are having to deal with, I think it is important the education remains a high priority.
