Politicians $$$,$$$

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2010/11/02/federal-government-pay-scale/

Since we've been talking about earnign power, I've decided to put the average salary of the polititians.

Congress members (Representatives and Senators): $174,000
Senate and House Majority/Minority Leaders: $193,400
Cabinet members: $199,700
Speaker of the House: $223,500
Vice President: $230,700
President: $400,000

Note: Most Congress members could earn more money based on their elaborate educational background. But the average income of those who are between in their fifties and sixties and with a bachelor's degree is $73,700.

Note: The median pay for Harvard grads are $198,000. But the pay is well over $400,000 for the top 10%, so Obama could have earned more money elsewhere.

Overpaid? Underpaid? Or is this reasonable??

  1. This is interesting....to be honest I have no complaints about this...it seems about right to me.... although I am sure the politicians think they should be making more

  2. These numbers don't seem ridiculous for the officials that run our country. I also have no complaints like Jon, I believe it is reasonable.

  3. Politicians probably think they deserve more and maybe they do, but I think these numbers sound reasonable.

  4. I agree with the above posts, I think these are fairly reasonable numbers. Without having salaries well above normal jobs, there would never be enough people that want to take on these positions. That being said, I think it would be asinine to pay these people anything more than these statistics because they are supposed to be doing a service for our country and our citizens rather than doing it for their own personal gain.

  5. I think that these numbers reflect a fraction of what these politicians actually gain from working in their position, when you consider their job benefits. For any federal government job, the health insurance, retirement, and pension packages are nothing short of remarkable. Read this article for some more information.

  7. I think that they are being paid the right amount, for their job. I was a little surprised at the amount the president is paid, I would have expected it to be over 400,000 though. I think Jake made a good point of pointing out that they are receiving a lot more because they have such good benefits, but I would still think this is a reasonable amount.

  8. I think that these amounts are definitely reasonable. The amount they earn is high enough for the amount of work in their job descriptions but it is not so high that citizens in the United States would be outraged at the amounts. But what does set them over the edge is what Jake mentioned with the benefit packages. Overall, I think that these are reasonable and the people in these positions choose to be there because they want to make a difference in the country, so I'm sure they are all okay with the amount that they make.

  9. I found an interesting article. Link here:
    http://www.economist.com/node/16525240

The article discusses the country leader's salary in comparison to the country's GDP per person. The U.S. ranks as the 8th highest. I think this article raises the question as to whether or not these leaders really deserve this proportion of the taxpayers' money

    1. 240 times the country's GDP? Say hello to corruption. Or is this just cultural difference? If one stands for his/her country, I don't think they could receive such a sum of money and not spend it on solving issues within the country.
