This article discusses how investors (mainly short-term) in corporations across the country do not care about or know the positive effects of giving back to the community.  Some corporations are trying to make it so investors become educated on the subject by creating a social responsibility index.  Corporations are stressing the fact that philanthropy is important not only for the betterment of society, but also for the economic growth of corporations, "Long term it will definitely force the short-term investors to think differently," he said. "You have to give back to make more money ... That has to be in shareholders' understanding."

Do you agree with what the corporations are trying to do? Is philanthropy as important as they are making it sound?

  1. Philanthropy is important...mega rich corporations should pour money back into the areas in which they operate because it helps out local communities. Right now, it seems like everyone has this notion that corporations and rich people are "evil" and philanthropy can help get rid of these stereotypes.

  2. I think that philanthropy is just as important as they are making it sound. Not only would they be helping out the community and those less fortunate but they would also be building a positive reputation for their company which I think can be just as important. I agree with Jon, companies do currently have the "evil" stereotype and philanthropy can help change this image, while do a good deed for others.

  4. I agree that philanthropy is very important and we should give back to the poor. We need to fight the look of big companies being evil. If companies can fight the bad rap they have and give back we will be so much better off as a country

  5. I think that philanthropy is very important. Large corporations should have the ethical character to do this without being told to do so.
